If you're looking at I beam truck axles as a donor, none are narrow enough to fit well. The right welder can narrow them with a Z cut, but that adds to the cost. A speedway axle kit might be your best choice. I have a chromed straight axle with lightening holes drilled in the beam, and it's from a mid 30's Chevy. I fitted it with Econoline E100 spindles, which happen to be a direct bolt on for the old Chevy. They are narrower, and will fit a Mustang or Falcon well. If you might locate a builder who's swapping MII front suspension into a mid 30's Chevy, you could get the axle cheap, and swap it to the E100 spindles for 5x4.5" bolt pattern. I'm going to also swap mine over to disc brakes before installing it, as I don't need to chase down drums and backing plates.
