;DH, I;ve loved gassers ever since my dad took me to San Fernando drag strip when i was a kid. i go to Famoso every year just to see the gassers. my question is i just picked up a 53 Chevy sedan delivery and i want to gasser it. I saw a front end kit from SPEEDWAY MOTORS that looks very nice and i also saw a guy selling plans on e-bay that claims that i could build my own for way cheaper than the kit and save money, can someone tell me which is better as I'm going to do this on a budget with my 2 sons, Ive got a 62 dodge max wedge clone I'm doing also so some of you guys know about ding 2 projects at the same time. thanks BOB

Bob-- In my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like, it is far more simpler and cost effective to use the speedway kit. While its true that you can make the entire setup yourself, if you mess up on aligning the kingpin bores perfectly, you may have to start over. The speedway kit is a guarantee to be correct, if its not, they will replace it with one that is. They also have their machined spindles if you'd like to go with disc brakes, and also the brakes themselves. The easier parts to make yourself, with the proper tools or equipment, would be the shock mounts, tie rod, and drag link. Just buy the rod ends and jam nuts for the latter 2. The rest is machining. Once again, just my opinion. Brian

I don't want to throw a monkey wrench into everything, but for the larger cars like the tri=five Checvys and early 50's Chevys I'd use what we used which is the '49-'54 Checy truck axles. For the smaller cars I'd use the Speedway kit, which I did for my Nova, but we used the Chevy truck axle for the larger cars. The next gen up like posted above will work also, but they are a little wider I think and I'd measure the width to make sure it won't be too wide when you include your tire option.

I thought the whole Idea of the Gasser was to keep this Old School . I can't afford to send Speed Way a bag 'o Money for a front end . I'm using a '93 Jimmy modified frame with the 2 "x 4" tube horns welded on . This set up allows me to use a 1953 1/2 ton truck straight axle .....it fits directly under the new fame , where all these parts were meant to be found . A total re-build kit cost me $210 , Canadian and the springs were re-arched for $50 . I'm using a ' 55 Chevy steering box and all is good , so far. ELWOOD
