When dad ran his 40 Chevy he used a three speed truck transmission. He would leave the line in second gear and just shifted in to high gear I have been told, i can remember it leaving packing the front wheels off the line and winning his fair share of races. I was young and don't care much about tech things just I was having time of my life at the strip. Dad has passed on about ten years ago so i cant find out what gear his was running under it to be able to do that. Anyone know just how low of a gear one would have to go to make it work.

Depends on the engine and tire he was running. I'd guess most well built SBC would be built to spin 7,000 or maybe more, and with a 28"-30" rear tire they would run something in the 4.86 to 5.13 range with a 2 speed trans. 2nd gear ratios will require something low geared, but you don't want to run out of rpm's before tripping the lights at the end of the 1/4 mile.

I have found out that the second gear in most inline 6s 3 speeds of that time ran around 1.86 and most V8s 3 speeds were a little higher, and that mom said she know that the engine was a 30 over 283 fuel injected with a mag.{her job was shoot fuel in injectors and crank the mag back until it fired then crank it back against the stop that dad made and tighten the wing nut.}thinking about trying it in my car to see if i can get close .As a friend said whats the worst that could happen blow some thing up. I have a 4.56 on the shelf.
