Hi,from sunny England I,m just treading water to bite the bullet on a steel van make over.Straight away I,m hitting all sorts of compromise because what started as a strip only idea has turned into a traffic friendly gasser. Its got to have 3 miles of rear tyre outside the fender line, gears and a slight front rake. The point to this is,do I go like youse guys and do a factory chassis re=vamp or should I go the whole new tube chassis route. At the moment I,m in a line for the chassis guy,I better make my mind up.I also was thinking tube front with leaf springs but he favours coil overs, would they fit the gasser look,I don,t think so.All advice graciously ignored joking

I favor modifying the current chassis with the tube axle and leaf springs and absolutely NO to coil overs!

Hello Thamesvan , The chassis you want depends on what your purpose is for this car (?) Is it just a racer or will it be street driven ?? Also , what are the requirements by Law that govern street vehicles that are heavily modified ?? You could always build your own box style frame c/w rear leaf springs and a front straight axle set up . If you have access to a welder it would be fairly easy . Measure twice.......weld once :-) I have re-worked a 1991 G.M.C. Jimmy (s.u.v.) frame and following the Gassers Inc. "how-to" photos added a 1953 Chevy truck straight axle , turned out Great !! Hopefully I will end up with a street legal Gasser . Cheers !! Elwood

Thanks Elwood Your right on the money, compromise; It was going to be a tyre shredding strip animal but trailering it once in a blue moon to the strip just is not going to cure my addiction.I,ve settled for fat streets (slicks on the street are not going to be forgiven over here)so I.m taming it down to be user friendly. The MOST crucial factor is that it can sit in traffic for hours at a time, yep,I,ve been suckered countless times. There ARE jams here day or night Unprotected tryres are also a no-no but thats what its getting

Good For You !! I attend local "show and shines " all Summer . I 'min Nova Scotia so the s eason is relatively short. Therefore I'm building a Multi-purpose ' 50 Chevy 2 door coupe . A driver -Gasser .....just loud enough to piss off the guys who have purchased their cars , not built them :-) Good luck , send in some pics of your build so we can drool over your van !! Cheers !! Elwood
