I have been dealing with this for two years now and I'm at my wits end! Two years ago the belt in my 57 started squeaking. I thought, replace the belt. Nope. The alternator felt a little gravely. No. I thought water pump, defiantly. Not it. Huh. Maybe it's the belt. Nope. Pulleys. It has to be the pulleys. Big no. One belt. Runs an alternator. Doesn't squeak with the belt off. Huh. Maybe it's the belt. Nope. I'm gonna try Ivory soap tomorrow. If that works................Every one is getting a bar of soap for Christmas.

Is this too obvious, the spindle is worn on alternator ,or pump,so the the pulleys are not running straight to each other when you rev it?

New and new. I finally got so pissed the other nigh and tightened the Eff out of it and it doesn't squeak. I think it is too tight. All my buddies say its okay. Even a certified mechanic. Maybe I'm a puss, but I thought it was tight before. It's a goo NAPA belt. But maybe that's the problem. Oh, soap didn't work. No soap for Christmas. Sorry.

I hate phantom problems, I'm chasing one in my '65 Biscayne. Good luck, hope you solved the problem.

Thanks. I tightened the hell out of it is fine now. Still feel like it's too tight. Father in law was saying his buddy had the same problem and went to a wider belt. Problem solved. I'm gonna try that next.
