I would like to build/buy a straight axle gasser Pontiac like 62-65 or possibly a Chieftain. A friend of mine showed me a picture of an old Chevy gasser about 10 yrs ago. I was hooked Almost immediately. Now that I'm getting back into cars I'm determined to own one. But don't know a lot about them. What cars/trucks did the axles come out of ? and does the front frame always need to be changed or can the axle be put under the factory frame? I would also like to know what if any modifications were made to the rear of the car. aside from the obvious awb cars. any info would be appreciated thanks Jim

The most popular axles, in my opinion, came from either the Ford Econolines or the '48-'54 Chevy trucks. I'm told that if you cut one of these stock I-beam axles and weld it to make it fit your application, it weakens the axle. I'm not sure how true that is, but if it's plate welded correctly, it should be fine. I'm pretty sure that the front frame doesn't always need to be changed, but it makes it look a lot cleaner most of the time, and most of the time won't have any bends where you don't want them for easier fabrication of the mounting points.

I use a kit that speedway makes...works good but they can bend under abuse.......that i know[

Welcome Jim! Another reason the frontends are cut off is to save weight. The '49-'54 Chevy truck axles are about 50"-51" wide and might be a bit narrow for a bigger car like the Pontiac, but the ford and chevy van axles are a bit wider and might work well in the larger Pontiac.
