I am planning my straight axle build and have a question. When I am getting ready to level out the car before any cutting, what is the proper way to go about this? How "perfect" does it need to be, lazer on a tripod perfect or a long bubble level and strings. I hope this isn't a dumb question but it is something I have not seen addressed, but have gotten many opinions on. If anyone has any pics or methods, please post.

I wish I could give you an answer, but Bob fab my front-ends and not sure exactly what he did to get things squared up. I do know that it wasn't anything fancy. A lot of measuring and levels and shims, but when it was done we put it on a frame rake at my buddies body shop and it was d**n near perfect!

No Question is silly . I have a friend who is and expert Carpenter.....YES !! , Carpenter !! This friggin' guy is meticulous with his measurements . We simply put my frame on Jack stands , measured from the top of the four corners to the floor , using wooden shingles for shims till all 4 corners were equal height.
I found the "hard part" and most important part was locating and maintaining the centre of your frame , from front to rear !! Once you cut off the front section .....there's no reference points to use to make certain your new 2" x 4" tubes are welded in parallell . A chalk line on the floor will help , also a plumb- bob. I also used a cheap laser level . I marked the rear frame cross member , marker the front frame cross member and shot the laser over both points . Shove a 3" nail thru a piece of tape and stick point up on the frame .......shine the laser over these . I then pot a dot of black marker on my garage door where the laser point landed .We measured everything from there and the new front end is Bang On !!
Call it nuts-house luck or whatever but it worked .......I' using a 1991 GMC Jimmy frame and rear end under a 1950 Chevy 2 door Coupe .
Good luck , if I can be of ant help, just ask ......I've already made your mistakes for you :-)
