I'm new to the group and am in the process of purchasing a 1965 mustang coupe ex-drag car. Iam in central wisc. If any one cares to contact me by phone; my home phone is 715-884-6418. I would like to put a straightaxle under this car and am thinking about rack and pinion steering. Has anyone ever done this? Should I even consider this? Are there drawbacks? I'm open to any advice.....even negative comments backed up with why this wouldn't work. And if someone has done this and had a positive result, I would be extremely interested as to how you accomplished this. Regards, Chris

I have seen this on 2 cars in my area, 1 on a Falcon and the other on a Willys. It will work, but just my opinion, it takes away from the car. On my buddy's Falcon, it hangs down in front of the axle on the mounts and just looks terrible. It drives and steers fine. On my other buddy's Willys, he has it mounted higher up, but it still just does not look all that good. I've seen it, and it works, I just don't like the looks of it.

No rack and pinion on a straight axle car!

Rack and pinion mounted on a straight axle looks ugly, and requires a slip joint on the steering shaft so that the rack can travel up and down with the axle and keep the steering from binding. If you mount the rack separately it will cause the front tires to toe in and out as the axle moves creating scarey handling and control issues. Best to keep it traditional.

Dont real big on the rack idea to any problems making work and hiding it so it don't take away from the look of the car.

The only reason to rack any car is for handling. Gassers are primarily strait line cars, so maybe if your gonna make a track car, but then you'd not want a strait axle. Just my opinion

64austin and thigh19 have good answers you will have bumpsteer issues if it's not mounted so low it looks bad. Make sure you know what you want to do with the car before you make it a little of everything that start to contradict each other. In my opinion there is no place for a rack on a gasser. But remeber to build a car you want the way you want it and who cares what anyone else thinks about it if its what you want.
